I know there is already a Dexter’s Laboratory movie in the form of the Ego Trip TV special from 1999, and sure, I know a lot of ‘die hard fans’ of the old-gold 1990s classic Genndy Tartakovsky involved original 52-episode first run of Dexter’s Lab + the aforementioned Ego Trip would break out in hives at the thought of another revival of Dexter’s Laboratory–and in fact, Dexter’s Lab is still considered to be one of those many kids cartoon TV shows (especially those from the 1990s, a time before the September 11th, 2001 Terrorist Attacks changed the world forever after) that may be deemed ‘un-revive-able’ especially for the second time already, and may be best left as it currently stands.
But if I worked hard enough, even as a filmmaker for animation or live action, and avowed lover of Genndy Tartakovsky’s animation work, and through hopefully a whole lot of hard graft and and a hopefully unparalleled creative vision…
If I do, I shall help put to rest any doubts about Dexter’s Laboratory being revived once again…
I have always harbored an ambition to someday do a theatrical big screen animated Dexter’s Laboratory feature film project–one that might reconnect with Genndy Tartakovsky’s original intentions for Dexter’s Laboratory up until Ego Trip by taking the Dexter’s Laboratory universe back to the old look, style, depth and flavor or so of the original 1990s 52-episode first run of Dexter’s Lab and away from the bad joke that the newer, 2001-2003 post Ego Trip seasons (and things like Jonnhy Test) had turned Dexter’s Laboratory into.
I want to attain the history and the true sensibility to revive Dexter, Dee Dee, Mandark and the rest of the Dexter’s Laboratory, Dial M For Monkey and Justice Friends gang in the old style and look of the original 1990s run of Dexter’s Laboratory up until Last But Not Beast and Ego Trip, but without the voice talent of the now late Christine Cavanaugh, of course,
((It might also be a breath of fresh air to see Dexter being forced to team up with not only his sister Dee Dee, but also her friends Mee Mee and Lee Lee (with more individual character development for each, rather than being just black Asian clones of Dee Dee) in order to save the day from Mandark, Dexter’s rival neighbor, and hopefully I’m rooting for Dee Dee’s friend Lee Lee or Dexter or Dee Dee themselves or her other friend Mee Mee to ultimately save the day from Mandark. Or maybe it’s just me.))
Yeah, I want to go back to the original look and style and depth and flavor of the original 1995-1999 run of Dexter’s Lab up until Last But Not Beast and Ego Trip, and what I want to do as far as a theatrical big screen Dexter’s Lab feature film is not only pretend that such a movie was made right between 1997-1998 episodes of Dexter’s Laboratory and the Ego Trip TV special as well, but also return the Dexter’s Laboratory cartoon characters hopefully to their original hand-drawn pre-21st century 1990s Genndy Tartakovsky-involved old-school character design and animation art style roots–especially by sticking with the animation technique that still works best: traditional two-dimensional and largely hand-drawn animation.
As far as the voice acting, I wanted outstanding evocations of the originals from between 1995 to 1999, which is something of a rarity now since Christine Cavanaugh’s passing.
Even if a theatrical big screen Dexter’s Laboratory animated feature film may ever become a reality, an actuality, and a fact, there will still be a chance that Dexter, Dee Dee, and even the other Dexter’s Lab toon characters (like Dee Dee’s ethnic friends Mee Mee and Lee Lee, Dexter’s rival neighbor Mandark, and Dexter and Dee Dee’s mom and dad with no names, as well as Action Hank, Monkey, Agent Honeydew, Major Glory, Val Hallen and the Infraggable Krunk of the Justice Friends fame) could still be (and better be) good–but most likely in their very own completely different ways.
And of course, a theatrical big screen Dexter’s Laboratory animated feature film won’t be quite the same as the old-gold 1990s originals by Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky (who is also Dexter’s Laboratory’s original creator), because whoever once again revived the Dexter’s Laboratory toon characters and/or Dexter’s Laboratory itself (myself included, hopefully) may have his or her very own style–especially in cinematic terms.
And whoever revived Dexter’s Laboratory and/or its characters once again (myself included, once again) would better not dumb down Dexter himself so that Dexter’s Laboratory could once again be age-appropriate–because I know THAT would upset a whole lot of older, lifelong, die hard fans of the original 1990s run of Dexter’s Laboratory.
But hopefully, this would make for one of the best, and one of the better, adaptations from a TV cartoon to a theatrical big screen feature film, for whoever bring Dexter’s Laboratory to the big screen (hopefully myself included) must truly take full, proper advantage of the theatrical big screen feature film movie format (including probably a neat visual trick once the loose plot takes off–which is the aspect ratio format opening up from a 1.85:1 ratio to the much grander 2.39:1 widescreen ratio, similar to Disney’s Brother Bear’s aspect ratio change) and will not only make a bigger, longer, and grander big screen Dexter’s Laboratory comedy action adventure in scope, scale or grandeur, but also doing things that few would dare to do not only in animation but in the film medium, too! I, for one, could have just easily make an extended episode for Dexter’s Lab fans only, but I want to go above and beyond above to make a brilliant theatrical big screen animated feature film based on and inspired by Dexter’s Laboratory as long as it will be mostly faithful to Genndy Tartakovsky’s intentions for Dexter’s Laboratory…
Apologies for such a long post, and you ladies and gentlemen don’t have to read ALL OF IT if you want to, but what did you think of all that?
